Morup Namgyal

Morup Namgyal is a folk musician and composer from the Himalayan region of Ladakh. He is best known for his contributions to the preservation of Ladakhi and Tibetan folk music. In the 1960s, Namgyal traveled throughout Ladakh, documenting the songs and folklores of the region. This journey began his lifelong effort to preserve Ladakh’s folk culture. Namgyal is one of the founders of Lamdon Social Welfare Society and Lamdon School, a nonprofit institution that promotes the cultural heritage of Ladakh. In 2004, the Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honor of Padma Shri for his contributions to Indian folk music. Namgyal is the subject of the film The Song Collector (Mountainfilm 2016).
