
Joan May
Joan May's activist leanings where launched into action when she became the primary plaintiff against Mountain Village in a voting rights case in the mid-1990s. She worked at KOTO-FM for 10 years and went on to become the Executive Director of the local conservation organization, Sheep Mountain Alliance for ten years, was elected to three terms as a San Miguel County Commissioner, and is now an independent contractor working primarily on promoting strong climate policy in Colorado along with other projects for public lands protection, workforce housing, and empowering those who are underrepresented. She is a founding board member of the Progressive Women's Caucus and also serves on the board Outdoor Alliance and Sheep Mountain Alliance. The San Juan Mountains have been her home since 1987.
