Background Information

Mountainfilm festival is a four-day, six-senses experience of art, adventure, culture and the environment. It attracts filmmakers, photographers, conservationists, artists, mountaineers and explorers from around the world. Our international audiences also come to gather in theaters that range from historical to state of the art in the box-canyon town of Telluride, Colorado and nearby Mountain Village, which is linked to Telluride by a free gondola.

Our motto is “Celebrating Indomitable Spirit.” The spirit we celebrate may be of a vital ecosystem or a fragile one. It may be of an endangered culture or one courageous soul. It may be a grassroots sustainability movement or the struggle of a species on the brink of extinction. In whichever case, it's always a spirit that is unique, important and eminently laudable.

Our Mission Statement

Mountainfilm uses the power of film, art and ideas to inspire audiences to create a better world.

We fulfill our mission with passion and joy over four days every Memorial Day weekend against the backdrop of the peaks of the San Juan Mountains. The festival has become the favored rendezvous for an international coterie of caring and concerned artists, activists, adventurers and advocates — the majority of whom are at the leading edge of their fields. Many of the 4,000 people that the festival attracts annually return year after year and are unhesitant to name the festival as one of the most inspiring and important events in their lives.

Our Values

Mountainfilm is a dynamic organization and festival of films, people, stories, and ideas that celebrates indomitable spirit, educates and inspires audiences, and motivates individuals and communities to advance solutions for a livable world.

Mountainfilm for Students

Mountainfilm for Students enlightens and inspires the lives of thousands of students locally, regionally, nationally and globally. By delivering age-appropriate films on issues that matter, we reach students in underserved communities with an accredited education program at no additional cost in the cities where Mountainfilm is screening. We also offer outreach to schools in the Telluride region and partner with Telluride Academy during the festival to provide an interactive student program.

Take Action

As a relatively small and intimate experience — and favored as it is by noteworthy films, presenters, speakers and guests — Mountainfilm has acquired a reputation as the premier festival of its genre in the world. But there is more that marks it as truly special: It has the power to change lives and promote action toward positive change. One way we do that is to facilitate involvement between Mountainfilm audiences and important causes. Feeling inspired? We invite you to Take Action today.
