Overview

South Memphis is a historic neighborhood long recognized for being the home of Soulsville USA and the birthplace of Aretha Franklin. The area has also historically struggled for basic resources. Many areas are recognized as food deserts as national chains have left due to crime, gang violence and basic economic inequalities. In 2018, a dedicated group got together and began an effort to bring lasting change and hope to the community. This unlikely place is a climbing gym called Memphis Rox.

Memphis Rox / One Family Memphis

When you join Memphis Rox, you aren’t just joining a gym — you’re joining a community. Rooted in creating a culture of encouragement and empowerment both on and off the wall, we never turn anyone away, regardless of an inability to pay. Instead, we’ve reimagined currency. It’s not only about money, but empowerment: a willingness to give what one can, be it a helping hand or simply an encouraging word. At Rox, climbing is simply a metaphor for overcoming life’s obstacles, and we believe we climb higher when we climb together.
