In the Dominican Republic, baseball is more than just a sport — it’s a way of life. Every child dreams of playing in the “big leagues,” and nearly every adult knows someone who has. However, as the nation’s passion for baseball flourishes, its natural environment is under threat from rapid development. Essential mangroves, which provide vital ecological benefits, are being destroyed to make way for new infrastructure. A new initiative aims to ignite a nationwide passion for environmental conservation through the country’s love for baseball.
En República Dominicana, el béisbol lo es todo. Pero mientras el país vive su pasión por el deporte, sus manglares —vitales para el ecosistema— están en peligro por el desarrollo. Una nueva iniciativa busca canalizar ese amor por el béisbol hacia la protección del medioambiente.

Seacology
Islands are incredibly important biodiversity hotspots and are key to addressing the global loss of mangroves and seagrass. Seacology works strategically with local community leaders and organizations in island communities to ensure long-term environmental protection while also supporting sustainable livelihoods. In the Dominican Republic, Seacology recognizes the importance of sports to the community and has integrated that local passion into a national campaign to protect and restore key ecosystems through their Play for the Mangroves initiative, which provides free equipment in exchange for participation in conservation training and hands-on environmental activities.
