Blue Heart

In Central Europe, river after river has been choked by hydropower dams in the last 50 years, to the point where many young people have never even seen a free-flowing river. But in the Balkans, rivers are thriving, beautiful, undammed and prized by the people who rely on them. Still, outsiders are eying these rivers, and there are thousands of plans in the works to build dams in these southeastern European countries. The people of the Balkans, however, are taking a stand. In this gorgeously shot documentary by Britton Caillouette, we watch real life David-versus-Goliath stories of people from Albania to Macedonia fighting against dams in smart and courageous ways, and often winning those battles.
