Overview

Thousands of Indigenous ancestors have been removed from their burial places and are trapped in museum archives. History, spirituality, culture and law collide as tribal repatriation specialists fight to reclaim and rebury stolen human remains, revealing the worldviews which justified collecting them in the first place. Despite a 1990 federal law mandating repatriation, only a small percentage of eligible remains have been returned. Aanikoobijigan lays bare this history and the courageous effort to bring the ancestors back home.
