Shepard Fairey

An iconic artist and muralist, Shepard Fairey was born in Charleston, South Carolina. A passion for skateboarding and punk music fueled his early years as an artist. In 1988, Fairey graduated from Idyllwild Arts Academy in Palm Springs, California. Fairey earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1992. Fairey’s work combines elements of graffiti, pop art, business art and Marxist theory. His work has been seen in galleries around the world and even museums. Fairey’s most famous art includes images of Andre the Giant, the Obey trademark and the propaganda poster of Barack Obama — which received the Brit Insurance Design of the Year Award in 2009. In 2017, Fairey installed a temporary mural on the main street of Telluride, Colorado.
