Sarah Rose Huckman

In seventh grade, Sarah Rose Huckman came out as transgender. Now a teenage athlete from Ossipee, New Hampshire, Huckman testified before the House Judiciary Committee in support of HB 1319, an anti-gender identity discrimination bill recently signed into law. As an athlete, Huckman competes in cross-country running, nordic ski racing and track. When she first sought to compete at the high school level, the N.H. Interscholastic Athletic Association (NHIAA) ruled that transgender athletes had to undergo surgery before they could play on a team. However, since 15- and 16-year-olds are too young to have surgery, Huckman and her family worked with GLAD and NHIAA to allow school districts to decide if a trans person can compete on the team that is consistent with their gender identity. She is the subject of Changing the Game (Mountainfilm 2019).
