Hu Wei

Splitting time between Paris, France, and his native Peking, China, filmmaker and artist Hu Wei works in many mediums, from cinema to sculpture. His Oscar-nominated short Butter Lamp (Mountainfilm 2015) starts with a popular practice in China, the family photo shoot. Following an itinerant photographer, the film documents groups of Tibetan families as they pose for the photographer in front of a variety of notable backgrounds, such as the Great Wall of China and Beijing Olympic Stadium.
