Hal Herring

A lifelong outdoorsman, mountaineer, hunter and fisherman, Hal Herring is best known for his work as an outdoor journalist. His work documenting the unlawful takeover of Oregon’s Malheur National Wildlife Refuge helped to win him the 2016 Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Ted Trueblood Award for Field & Stream. He has written for publications that range from the Atlantic Monthly and the Economist to Creative Nonfiction and Orion. He specializes in deeply reported, long-form journalism stories and essays.
