George Saunders

Like many writers, George Saunders has a colorful past, including working as a field geophysicist in an oil field in Sumatra and a stint as a slaughterhouse worker. Eventually, Saunders found his way to the written word, and his career has spanned many topics and awards, from the National Magazine Award to a finalist for a National Book Award. He has been both a Macarthur and a Guggenheim fellow, and The New Yorker named him one of the best writers under 40 in 2002. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper’s, The Guardian and many other publications, and his books include Tenth of December: Stories, which was a New York Times bestseller. He teaches at Syracuse University and is profiled in the short documentary George Saunders: On Story (Mountainfilm 2016).
