David de Rothschild

Inspired by Thor Heyerdahl’s legendary Kon-Tiki expedition across the Pacific Ocean, David de Rothschild sailed from San Francisco, California, to Sydney, Australia, in 2010. He made the four-month voyage in a vessel similar to Heyerdahl’s primitive reed barque, except that de Rothschild’s vessel was made with 12,500 recycled plastic bottles. His expedition was intended to showcase the problem of waste and, especially, plastic garbage in the world’s oceans. A special guest presenter at Mountainfilm 2011, de Rothschild’s film Plastiki (Mountainfilm 2012) is a Mountainfilm world premiere.
