Dave Mayers

Dave Mayers is a cinematographer, an Emmy-nominated documentary producer and an adjunct professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism where he has taught video and multimedia storytelling. He is drawn to telling stories from the developing world, specifically stories that try to evoke empathy and understanding for people and places that are often misunderstood. Mayers spent five years in South Africa, teaching at one of that country’s largest journalism programs, and working on the Johannesburg desk for The New York Times. He currently produces and shoots for the HBO series ‘VICE News Tonight.’ Mayers directed Becoming Ruby (Mountainfilm 2020), a short film that explores identity through the experiences of Brooklyn Bell, a mountain biker, skier and artist who leans on a hand-drawn hero to help her discover and own her identity.
