Anusha Shankar

Anusha Shankar is a National Geographic Explorer and PhD candidate in ecology and evolution at Stony Brook University in New York. She studies how hummingbirds address their daily energy needs, and has used infrared video to capture the birds’ secret nightlife — which involved both snoring and peeing. Shankar also co-produces two websites aimed at the scientifically curious layperson: Brainchem-ecology.com uses infographics to explain scientific breakthroughs and concepts, and ScienceOutside.com shares scientists’ stories of adventures, mishaps and surprises out in the field.
