In 1964, the largest quake ever measured in North America hit Alaska, a 9.2-magnitude doozy that caused a terrible chain of destruction. That quake, and the groundbreaking scientific work that was done to understand it, is the subject of journalist Henry Fountain’s 2017 book, The Great Quake.
