In 1999, with almost no experience, Telluride local Suzan Beraza wrote a movie script, found a friend with a camera and talked a few others into traveling to the Dominican Republic to shoot her first film, Sister and Brother. The short piece showed at Mountainfilm 1999 and helped launch an impressive career in editing and documentary filmmaking. Beraza went on to make the 2010 feature documentary Bag It, an eye-opening piece about the ubiquitous presence of plastic in our lives. That film has won numerous awards and been widely appreciated by audiences. Now, after more than two years of shooting, the end of her second feature documentary is in sight: Uranium Drive-In examines a proposed uranium mill in southwest Colorado’s Paradox Valley that holds the promise of jobs for some residents and the threat of widespread environmental harm for others.
