Making Movies That Matter

Making Movies That Matter At the Festival: For Educators

This year, Mountainfilm is offering a special workshop for teachers who would like to come to Telluride over Memorial Day Weekend, experience our festival, and get inspired.
The Making Movies That Matter workshop includes:

  •     A Sunshine Festival Pass
  •     Housing for the weekend in a private home,
  •     Social and other special events,
  •     Seminars,
  •     Technical instruction in digital editing, AND
  •     One graduate-level credit.

All you have to do is get yourself here.

Teachers who are looking for a wonderful way to start the summer and are interested in learning how to incorporate documentary films and hands-on digital projects into their classes, should sign up as soon as possible. Space is limited: The cost is $300.

The workshop will begin at 3:30 PM on Friday, May 25th and end mid-afternoon on Monday, May 28th.  Teachers who would like to attend the Moving Mountains Symposium on Friday will need to purchase a separate ticket for that event.

Please contact Education Director Ellen Shelton to sign up, and for more information:  ellen@mountainfilm.org.

Making Movies That Matter:  In the Classroom

Our year-round in-school educational program…

…introduces content-rich, issue-based films to middle and high school teachers,

…offers an innovative hands-on way for students to engage with contemporary issues that matter

…encourages media literacy & critical thinking within the context of Language Arts, Social Studies & Science classes,

…provides meaningful content for Media Arts classes.

In cooperation with filmmakers and distributors, we are developing digital packets that will be ready for educators by Memorial Day Weekend.  Our growing library of films currently includes:

In brief, MMTM works like this: A classroom screening of a content-rich documentary is followed by guided, hands-on, digital editing projects in which students use footage from the source film to craft their own short video reaction to themes and issues raised.

Students and teachers need to have access to computers with film editing software and basic knowledge of (or tech support for) their equipment.  A 2-3 minute student project requires approximately 10 computer-hours to complete and can be implemented at any time throughout the academic year.

Making Movies That Matter At the Festival: For Students

Beginning this year, Mountainfilm will offer either the Memorial Day Weekend Student program or the Teacher Workshop on alternating years, with a Teacher Workshop scheduled for 2012.
