Charlie Fowler

A longtime Telluride local and a world-class mountaineer and ice climber Charlie Fowler, along with his climbing partner Christine Boskoff, perished in an avalanche in China in 2006. Also a photographer and writer, Fowler set new routes around the world, including a famous free solo of Middle Cathedral Rock in Yosemite National Park in 1977. He went on to become a leading high-altitude mountaineer, summiting Mt. Everest, Cho Oyu and Aconcagua. He was exploring some unnamed peaks in China when he was killed. Fowler was a member of the board of directors for Mountainfilm in Telluride.
