Steve Winter was named the 2008 National Geographic Wildlife Photographer of the Year for his photos of the snow leopard. He tracked the animals for more than ten months—often using camera traps—and gathered more than 30,000 images. The snow leopard—a notoriously shy animal with a remarkable tail—moves mostly during the night at high altitudes, making this project the hardest work Winter had ever done.
