Climbatology
50 Years of Climate, Culture and Landscape Change Around Mt. Everest 2008 MF
Special Presentation

Perhaps more than the average joe, rock climbers and mountaineers see firsthand how glaciers are receding and the planet is warming. The American Alpine Club is trying to do their part with a new program called Climbatology. Conrad Anker, one of the world’s leading mountaineers, will share what he’s seen during his journeys to the rooftop of the world. Sharing the stage with him will be Alton Byers, a mountain geographer and director of the Alpine Conservation Partnership. Alton spent 30 days in the Mt. Everest region last fall, recreating the prized 1950s-era photographs of Swiss glaciologist Fritz Müller and Austrian alpinist and mapmaker Erwin Schneider. “This is the first time that their photographs have been replicated, and they give us an on-the-ground experience of climate change in the Everest region during the past 50 years,” says Alton.
