These photos were made by students in Brazil, who were given cameras to document their community, families and themselves. The struggling neighborhood they live in was built on ocean fill and is aptly and accurately called “alagados,” which literally means “flooded.” The photos were curated by filmmaker Sylvia Johnson, whose lovely short film Alagados is in the festival. Like the film, the students’ photos capture a remarkable portrait of these challenging young lives, which are filled with many trials, tribulations and, also, a few triumphs.
