The Price of Sugar
Bill Haney 2007 Dominican Republic & USA
90 min

Trust me—if you are going to try to use slave labor, you don’t want Father Christopher Hartley around, because he’s going to be a total pain in the neck. In The Price of Sugar, he takes on the super-wealthy Vicini family. They smuggle impoverished Haitians into the Dominican Republic to harvest sugar cane—which ultimately ends up on American breakfast cereal. Once on the plantations, the Haitians are essentially enslaved and forced to work in inhumane conditions. Their best hope is the good Father Hartley, whose courage under fire is an inspiration to us all and whose work is a true act of faith.
