Martin Litton ranks high on my list of personal heroes—and not just because he still flies his single-prop plane at 91. A pioneer of the early environmental movement in America, Martin teamed up with other legends, such as David Brower and Edward Abbey, to successfully fight projects that would have flooded Dinosaur National Park and the Grand Canyon. Martin has also long been a champion of protecting the last remaining redwood and sequoia forests from the depredations of commercial logging. He was instrumental in the establishment of both the Redwood National Forest and the Giant Sequoia National Monument. In 1999—44 years after he first floated the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon—Martin broke his own record as the oldest person to have ever run the Canyon, rowing the entire length in a wooden dory. In The Good Fight, you’ll get a good picture of a great American.
