The Giant Buddhas

Christian Frei

Before the United States invaded Afghanistan and before the Taliban became a household name for Americans, two enormous stone sculptures of Buddha— created 1,600 years ago in what is present-day Afghanistan—were destroyed by the Taliban. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Christian Frei (War Photographer) takes the story of the destruction of these two great Buddhas and intertwines it with stories of three separate pilgrimages to Afghanistan: a centuries-ago Chinese monk traveling to see the Buddhas; a modern day Canadian woman of Afghani descent, trekking to her father’s birthplace in Bamiyan; and the filmmaker’s own personal journey.
